According to a report from Global News, the saperda is the bugging causing the damage, impacting many of the poplar stands from Edmonton to Saskatoon.

Over the past decade, Alberta’s pine population has been severely impacted by the spread of the mountain pine beetle. The report states that 25 per cent of the province’s pine population has been impacted by the MPB breakout, while 30 per cent of the poplar population is likely to be impacted by the saperda.
