Labour market data lacking

Nov. 7, 2014 – Statistics Canada is redesigning its labour force survey (LFS) to improve its relevance and quality. In its current condition, it contains serious statistical gaps such as details on temporary foreign workers, unpaid interms, underempoyment, and details on skill shortages.

Statscan has faced budget cuts and staff reductions, according to the Globe and Mail. Employment and Social Development Canada has cut spending on labour market information by more than 20 per cent over the past two years.

The Conservative Government is now looking to plug these gaps with an additional $14-million a year for two Stascan surveys that will include detailed regional jobs data.
