MPB presence could increase in Alberta

August 27, 2015 – The drought-stress affecting the tree population in Alberta could mean an increase to the province’s population of Mountain Pine Beetle.

A report in the Calgary Herald suggests that, as the province conducts its aerial survey of its forests over the next few weeks, the beetle could have an easier time spreading throughout Alberta’s pine tree population.

The hot, dry summer in Alberta has caused drought-like conditions in some of the province’s forests, which experts believe the aerial surveys will illustrate. The conditions are also making more of the province susceptible to increasedforest fire activity, already an issue in B.C. as well as Washington State.
