No patent for wood grain

July 21, 2014 – Laminate designs based on nature cannot be copyrighted, according to a lawsuit between U.S. laminate flooring distributors Mannington Mills and Home Legend.

Mannington sued Home Legend for copying its patented approach to a maple floor pattern but the judge said Mannington had tried to reproduce the wood grain, which occurs naturally and cannot be covered under copyright protection.
