Canfor fined $130K after worker injured by planer

March 12, 2019  By  Ellen Cools

WorkSafe B.C. has fined Canfor nearly $130,000 in the wake of an accident at the company’s Vavenby sawmill.

According to CFJC Today, a worker came into contact with a planer’s rotating top head, resulting in serious injuries. WorkSafe B.C.’s investigation revealed the employee was attempting to unjam the planer, which had been jammed by a broken board, using a stick.

Although the planer was locked out, it had been switched to bypass mode days earlier, so the planer head continued spinning, reports CFJC Today.

Canfor was consequently fined for several errors or oversights.
