Cold Alberta weather will help fight against mountain pine beetle

Recent cold weather in Alberta has killed 95 per cent or more of mountain pine beetles in some areas, according to biologist Janice Cooke.
Cooke, a University of Alberta biologist, told CBC there has been significant killing of the beetle in areas where populations had concentrated east of Jasper and around Hinton.
“We are seeing patches where we see better than 95 per cent death, so less than five per cent are living in these areas. We will know for sure when May rolls around and surveys are done,” Cooke said.
