PHL Industries is based in Saint-Éphrem in the Beauce region south of Quebec City, and had 33 employees at the time of the purchase. A long time supplier to both softwood and hardwood sawmills principally in Eastern Canada and the eastern US, PHL Industries makes and services sawmill, planer mill and lumber handling equipment.
“The acquisition of PHL is a strategic move for Comact,” explained Comact president Pierre Morency in a press release. “It allows us to round out our complete equipment line, especially in the hardwood sector, and it also significantly increases our production capacity.” In that sense, it is a well timed move, as the recovery in the US lumber market is expected to strain the production capacity of many equipment suppliers as sawmills move to modernize.
Morency added that for its part, PHL Industries will benefit from an enhanced sales and service network as well as a very solid financial platform.
