Federal government provides update on National Adaptation Strategy for climate change

The Canadian government on August 11 released a report, Adapting to the Impacts of Climate Change in Canada: an update on the National Adaptation Strategy. The report builds upon the first round of conversations the federal government had with provinces and territories, NGOs, the private sector, Indigenous representatives and south organizations to identify the strategy’s objectives and principles.

The federal government also announced it will be launching adaptation advisory tables led by environmental organizations, adaptation experts, Indigenous peoples and other key stakeholders. These tables will create a framework for concrete adaptation action, goals and advice on how to face climate change.

The National Adaptation Strategy is meant to identify how best to protect Canadians, the natural ecosystem and biodiversity from the impacts of climate change and outline measures that focus on investments to increase communities’ resilience.

As part of Budget 2021, the federal government announced $3.79 billion in investments related to climate change adaptation and resilience, including investments in wildfire resilience.
