A cut above 2017: Latest tech for the filing room

March 31, 2017 - Canadian Forest Industries checks out the latest tech for the filing room.

Automated bench
Simonds International’s model 095 Automated Bench is designed to improve filing room productivity for bandsaw mills. The 095 AB features a large touchscreen control panel for performing levelling and tensioning tasks. It can simultaneously level and tension saws up to 15” wide and up to 65’ long, while measuring to .0004” across the entire area of the saw – length and width. The machine performs all scanning via a contact sensor. The learn mode on the Simonds 095 AB allows the filer to load a properly levelled and tensioned saw on the AB and the machine will measure, document and learn the bench work specifications such that it can be stored and reused on subsequent runs.

Saw control system
The Saw Control System marries control parameters set in the file room to the sawyer’s feed-handle position. The sawyer has complete control of entry into the cut and holds the joystick position throughout the cut. The Saw Control System is designed to enhance speed, depending on the depth of the cut. Benefits for filers include: alerts of guide buildup and/or guide wear problems; helps determine saws for correction tension, tire and tooth shape; alerts of bad saws or guides; warns of bearing problems; shows saw cracks, as well as dull and sharp saws; and assists in evaluating saw filing equipment.

Dualsensors
The latest innovation in Saw+ADD developments is the use of two force sensors in each saw guide. One is on the leading edge of the guide and the second is on the trailing edge of the guide. Using the differential of dual sensors provides a measurement of twisting on the saw blade that steers it into deviation. It also provides a common mode rejection that allows a gain on the control signal, giving it about 100 ms lead time over a single sensor. This is a tremendous advantage for closed loop control of the feed velocity.

Babbitt molds
Precision Machinery has redefined conventional babbitt pad design for circular saws. Their exclusive new line of babbitt moulds provide superior saw cooling. Laboratory testing shows a 65 per cent reduction in saw operating temperatures and a 90 per cent improvement in cooling time between cuts. Real world machine operation with this new design provides an average 4x saw life increase (run time between saw changes).

Knife grinder
DK-SPEC’s multifunctional knife grinder is designed for heavy heads of high-speed planers that need accuracy and repeatability when grinding. It has a grinding wheel diameter up to 12”, a cutting head diameter of up to 20”, and a maximum cutter head length of 15”. It is built with a 5-hp grinding spindle motor and features a variable speed of 900 to 3,500 rpm. The grinder is designed for simple installation and can come with an optional overhead crane. An appropriate set-up stand is recommended.

Automatic brazing machine
Gerling’s SAWMASTER Automatic Brazing Machine handles saw blades with diameters ranging from 4” to 32”, rake angles from -10 to +30 degrees, carbide saw tip widths from 1.5 to 10 mm (0.060” to 0.400”) and tip lengths from 5 to 27 mm (0.196” to 1.062”). Special features include a sensor for removal of individual tips or complete removal of all tips, tip sorting by an optical non-touching positioning system, touch screen control panel for parameter input, V-top and alternate tips brazed with ease. Carbide tips are sorted and fed through a bowl feeder and longitudinal conveyor belt. Dosing of flux onto the tips is performed by a dosing valve. The unit includes a rotary-indexing-table system; a temperature control unit with pyrometer; a 5.6 kW high frequency generator; PLC machine control; and a water cooling system.

Universal sharpening machine
The Vollmer CHP 840 is a universal sharpening machine for carbide-tipped circular saw blades ranging from 80 to 840mm (33”) in diameter. It is built with four CNC-controlled axes for accurate grinding in one cycle. Additional features include a newly developed multifunctional handwheel; oscillation grinding; and automatic central lubrication. The unit is hydraulic-free, V-Top grinding capable and no tooth pitch input is required. The CHP840 uses imperial or metric inputs.

Automatic benching machine
The Iseli RZ-1 Automatic Benching Machine offers fully automatic levelling, tensioning and back measuring-adjusting of the saw blades in one operational setup. It handles blade widths ranging from 70 to 360 mm and blade thicknesses of 0.8 to 2.0 mm. The unit has a working speed of 15 m/min. The machine is equipped with a modern, selectively programmable control unit and touchscreen display. The order of levelling, tensioning and back measuring-adjusting can be selectively called and programmed. The programmed values can be downloaded and recalled with the same values for duplication of saw blades of the same specification at a later time.

Sawguides
Modern Engineering guarantees the accuracy of its precision sawguides within 0.0002” and each one is CMM tested before being shipped out. The sawguides are designed to reduce wastage and downtime, to ensure that mills are running as efficiently and productively as possible. Modern Engineering has been manufacturing honed aluminum and ground steel sawguides for over 25 years.

Acoustic circular saw monitoring
Wolftek Industries proudly offers Fellner Engineering’s CSM Heartbeat system CSM Heartbeat system monitoring the “heartbeat” of the saw blades like a stethoscope. Every slight noise is registered and appropriate impulses are immediately sent on to the control unit of the sawing line. CSM Heartbeat reduces the feed rate – often just for a second, so as to prevent any “pinching” and reducing saw step from unsteady saw blades. After this short reduction, the sawing plant immediately carries on again at normal speed. In the right applications speed can be increased if you know that the saw is running continuously below standard tolerances such as when saws are new and sharp or on different species.

HY2 SPIRAL Chipping Head
Key Knife developed the HY2 SPIRAL chipping head to aid mills in their effort to increase canter feed rates to unprecedented levels, some in excess of 900 fpm.
HY2 SPIRAL heads utilize a spiral knife configuration that produces a smooth cutting action, resulting in excellent board finish and chip quality. The long lasting Ridge XL Knife is rehonable, in many cases multiple times, which significantly reduces knife costs. Consumable parts are standardized to allow for part rotation, and to keep inventory costs low.

Fully automatic brazing machine
Hana’s H50 Ultimate Brazer offered by Williams & White handles saw blades with diameters ranging from 100 to 800mm, tip lengths from 4 to 12 mm, tip widths from 1.6 to 8.0 mm and hook angle from -10 to +30 degrees. Brazing times are 5.5 to 7 seconds per tip. Additional features include 3-axis servo control; dual sensor for capturing different sizes and shapes of saw tips; precise dispensing of flux in line or in small dots; Eco Drive mode to save electricity; and an intelligent error display hosting the reason, position, time and recovered time.
