Fires break out at two northwestern N.B. sawmills

A mill fire broke out at the Twin Rivers Paper Company sawmill in Plaster Rock, N.B., on Friday, May 22. The fire was contained to chip and bark piles.

“The company is undertaking an assessment of the cause and any damages,” said Paul Black, a spokesperson for the company, in an email statement to CBC on Friday. “Twin Rivers is working with all regulatory authorities, and thanks its employees and the first responders in the community for their efforts and personal sacrifice in keeping everyone safe.”

One day prior, a fire took broke out at the SBC Cedar manufacturing plant in Saint-André, N.B. That fire spread through the woodyard as firefighters protected the plant.

There were no injuries at either fire.
