Forest industry welcomes Canfor co-op student from NB

The almost 21-year-old Green Dream blogger and process engineering co-op student said seeing the mountain ranges when flying into Vancouver was a captivating detail she won’t soon forget. That and her co-workers, friends and neighbours who she encountered when landing in Fort St. John, B.C., and eventually Taylor.

“I came [to Taylor, B.C.] on my own so the people have been incredibly accommodating and welcoming. It’s just been tremendous.”

In addition to discovering northern British Columbia, Flack is also learning about the field of forestry firsthand and says she loves the fact the industry matches her own set of values.

“I just love that [the industry is] sustainable,” she says. “I believe that we need to use the resources that we have but we can use them in a way that won’t be detrimental in the future.”

When she returns to school in the winter, Flack is determined to let her fellow classmates know that they need to consider the forest industry when planning their future careers.

“A lot think oil and gas for engineers but engineering students should really consider forestry. It’s an industry that offers a lot of innovative opportunities.”

Flack is one of 10 Greenest Workforce Green Dream scholarship recipients who are sharing their expertise and learning about the industry first-hand at forest operations across the country. Each year, through the Green Dream program, The Greenest Workforce recognizes young professionals who are passionate about working in the forest products industry and show great initiative by bettering the forest products sector and the communities they work in.

In 2013, Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) created www.TheGreenestWorkforce.ca, an online resource website to highlight career opportunities in Canada’s forest products industry. The website has grown to feature a job-matching tool to match job seekers with rewarding careers in the sector. Openings in Administration, Science and Engineering, Woodlands, Skilled Trades and Mill Operations are open now across the country.
