Close to a dozen representatives from associations and organizations across the province, including the Ontario Forestry Association and the Canadian Institute of Forestry, along with several family members, close friends and longtime employees paid tribute to him at an unprecedented special awards ceremony held recently at his residence at Riverwood Retirement Suites in Alliston, Ont.

“I think the main gist of the award is that he’s one of the private individuals that’s forested more of southern Ontario than anyone else,” John’s son Fred Somerville, told Simcoe.com.

John Pineau, chief executive officer of the Canadian Institute of Forestry, was one of the many award presenters. He commended Mr. Somerville for how much time he’s volunteered with the institute and for his commitment to giving back to the profession.

“We put together this lifetime achievement award for you with the full endorsement of our national executive membership. Its certainly something that’s very appropriate, you have made great contributions over the years.”
