The City of Fort St. John has expressed “shock and sadness” following Canfor’s announcement to close the Fort St. John sawmill by the end of 2024, a decision that will significantly impact the community.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this announcement from Canfor,” said Mayor Lilia Hansen. “This news is a significant hit to our community and the families directly affected.”

Hansen emphasized the city’s commitment to supporting the local economy and workforce, noting that City Council has worked closely with industry partners like Canfor through recent challenges. “We remain committed to advocating for better regulatory conditions to support our local economy and workforce,” she added.

In a statement, the city said it is now focused on working with all stakeholders to mitigate the impact of the closure on the community.
