B.C. forests at risk of mega fires: report

Dec. 8, 2014, Vancouver – A Ministry report suggests that climate change is dramatically increasing the risk of mega fires in the forests of B.C.

The Climate Change Adaption Action Plan for Wildfire Management 2014-2024, released by the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, suggests that fire prevention should be considered the top priority for the province.

According to a report from The Vancouver Sun, who obtained the document dated April 2014 through a Freedom of Information request, the average temperature is expected to rise four degrees over the next 60 years. Combined with the Mountain Pine Beetle infected wood that still exists throughout B.C., the risk of mega fires will increase sharply in the coming decades.
