Finning Demo of New Cat D7E in B.C.
Finning Canada took over a large part of the Operating Engineers Yard in the Vancouver, B.C. suburb of Maple Ridge in late March to showcase the Cat D7E. The demo was part of a series of D7E demonstration days at 14 Caterpillar dealers across North America. The two day event in Maple Ridge attracted about 60 people.

The new track-type tractor, features a revolutionary diesel-electric power train that uses 10 to 30% less fuel and, according to Caterpillar, moves 10% more material per hour than its predecessor, the Cat D7R.
The D7E is built for tough conditions and features a heavy-duty, low-drive undercarriage engineered for durable service in severe applications such as logging. It is also available in standard and low-ground-pressure configurations and can be ordered with an optional Cat System One undercarriage, which uses “sealed pin-and-bushing cartridges” and “balanced-life-components” throughout – a design that Caterpillar says can reduce undercarriage maintenance costs by 35 to 70%.
Weighing in at 60,000 lbs and standing at 11 ft. high, the D7E can be loaded up with options, including a heated seat, GPS, autopilot blade controls, rock guards and a rear camera. Power comes from a 9.3-litre 6-cylinder ACERT Caterpillar diesel engine that delivers 235 HP and 719 pound-feet of torque. The D7E also has a 480-volt generator and two 107 HP electric motors that power the tracks to a top speed of about 12 KPH (7 MPH).
A new three-section aluminum radiator uses separate circuits for the engine (water-jacket), charge-air system and electrical-power system, including the inverter and generator module. The design of the radiator cooling systems reduces parasitic load and saves fuel, while the electrical drive motors are cooled simply and effectively by power train oil.
The D7E was designed with the operator in mind and features an interior sound level of just 73dB(A) and an integrated display screen that provides a range of machine status information. Visibility from the D7E’s cab is also excellent, including sightlines to the blade.
Several blade and rear work tool configurations are available and the D7E ships form the factory complete with grade control system wiring and mounting points, facilitating easy installation of the Cat AccuGrade system if required.
