Sawtech Log Expo 2012

Ontario’s largest forestry show was a showcase of the newest equipment for both small and large woodlot owners. Held in Bancroft, the biennial Sawtech Log Expo drew thousands of people looking for the newest technology available in the forestry industry.

Here is Canadian Forest Industries’ look at the equipment, and the companies, that stood out at Sawtech Log Expo 2012

Portable Sawmills
The show featured one of the largest displays of portable sawmilling equipment in Canada. Major manufacturers like Woodmizer and Norwood all had their newest models on hand as part of the outdoor showcase. Offering multiple live demonstrations per day, each manufacturer held a captive audience of small woodlot owners looking for new equipment
solutions.

Heavy Equipment
Several heavy equipment dealers were part of the outdoor display area, offering the latest equipment from John Deere, Cat, Volvo, Bandit and Rottne. That gave attendees a look at the newest chippers, skid steer loaders, wheel loaders, excavators, track loaders, and other forestry machines needed to optimize production on the job site.

Forestry Attachments
There were few forestry attachments on display at the show, as many exhibitors focused on tools for smaller woodlot owners. Quadco’s 18C harvesting head was part of Toromont’s display of Cat forestry equipment, wrapping the harvesting head around a tree in the lot while attached to Cat’s 501HD.

ProMac Manufacturing of Duncan, B.C., showed off its brushcutter attachments in a static display indoors, and attached to a John Deere 190D outside at the Nortrax display. Also indoors, Silvana used a video display to show off the Bracke C16.b silviculture and biomass harvester head, Silvana is distributing in Canada.

Mulchers
Both PrimeTech and BaumaLight had mulching equipment on display as part of the outdoor static displays. Capital Land Clearing Ltd. of Frankville, Ont., was displaying the latest model of PrimeTech’s full-size mulchers, the 275-horsepower PT-300. The PT-300 is one of four models available in PrimeTech’s newest line of mulching equipment. For woodlot owners at the show looking for something smaller, the BaumaLight Brush Fire Skid Steer model was exhibited attached to a Terex PT-80 compact track loader.

Log Splitting and Processing
There was a range of log splitting and firewood processing options available at the show. Oregon had its full range of products as part of its booth at Sawtech, including log splitters, chainsaws, chains, parts and supplies. Both its 22-ton and 28-ton log splitters were part of the live demonstrations that the company offered, showing off the equipment’s vertical and horizontal capabilities.

Ontario manufacturers CordKing and Bell’s Machining offered live demonstrations of their firewood processing equipment.

CordKing was showing the 50-horsepower M2030, which carries a log capacity of up to 20-inch diameter and 30-foot length, but is also available in an extended model. Bell’s Machining had the 60-horsepower 4000 series processor on hand for live demos, which features an 18-inch circular saw and 22-inch bar saw, and has a 30-ton splitter force.

Overall, the show primarily appealed to smaller woodlot owners working in the forests of northern and central Ontario, but also offered a variety of products for larger forestry operations. Many local forestry operations, including Bancroft’s Freymond Lumber, had a strong presence at the show to help show the quality of the forestry industry in
the region.
