Scorpion coming to Canada

Oct. 15, 2013 – In an effort to expand their North American presence, Ponsse is bringing their newest forest machine to this side of the ocean in August 2014. Canadian Forest Industries was in Finland last week to see how it compares to the rest of the Ponsse fleet.

Ponsse's Scorpion harvester has been designed with the operator in mind in an effort to reduce the distractions that contribute to fatigue. The crane reaches up from behind the cabin and over the top to avoid obscuring visibility. The cabin and the crane have been leveled through the machine's triple-frame structure to offer a smooth ride with a low centre of gravity to provide stability over uneven ground. The eight-wheel design minimizes ground pressure.

The Scorpion has been popular in Europe since its introduction there. The company plans to introduce the machine to its North American customers in August 2014 but already two have been sold to Canadian customers – one as a Father's Day gift from a lucky man's wife.

Powered by Ponsse's 4F engine, the machine meets North American emission standards taking effect in 2014. It combines exhaust gas purification using the SCR system and exhaust gas recirculation using the EGR system.

The 210 kW engine is paired with a C50 crane that can support the Ponsse H5, H6 or H7 harvesting heads to be chosen according to the size of the timber to be cut. The machine's eight-wheel design works well on steep slopes and over tricky terrain. Mounted with the H5 and H6 heads, the crane can reach 11 metres with a slewing angle of 280 degrees.

The machines also include Ponsse's Opti6 processor with a touch screen. The operating system can be installed as an upgrade to older Ponsse models as well.
