Howie Ewashko elected chair of the AFPA

September 24, 2015 –  At its 73rd Annual General Meeting and Conference, the Alberta Forest Products Association (AFPA) announced that Howie Ewashko has been elected chair of the association’s Board of Directors.

Ewashko is the president of Northland Forest Products Ltd. in Fort McMurray, Alta. The business has been in the Ewashko family for 44 years.

“It is a great honour to be elected Chair of the AFPA,” said Ewashko. “Our industry has been a significant part of Alberta’s social fabric and economy for several generations. By working collaboratively, we can ensure the industry remains an environmental leader and a supporter of 50 communities throughout Alberta. I also look forward to working closely with our recently elected government to manage Alberta’s forest resource responsibly and promote safe and healthy workplaces.”

AFPA President and CEO Paul Whittaker welcomed Ewashko to the Chair’s role.

“Howie brings a wealth of experience as the operator of a family business that has thrived in Alberta for generations. His leadership will be invaluable to us as we work to strengthen Alberta’s brand as an environmentally responsible producer of resources.”

The AFPA has been the unified voice of Alberta’s forest industry for 73 years. It works with government and communities to diversify Alberta’s economy in a sustainable manner and manufacture quality products for consumers around the world. Forestry has a strong record of environmental responsibility. In 2015, AFPA members planted 65 million seedlings – 14 for every Albertan. The forest industry creates 15,000 stable, well-paying jobs for Albertans. An additional 30,000 Albertans are supported by economic activity that the industry generates.

Ewashko replaces Craig Armstrong as AFPA Chair. Armstrong will remain on the Association’s executive as Past Chair. Fred Dzida, president and CEO of Weyerhaeuser Company Limited, was elected vice-chair.
