Increased demand drives up lumber prices: Madison’s

Demand for spruce and hem/fir improved again this week as commodity prices settled out or firmed up. Sales of panels still struggled to get off the mat, though plywood prices did gain a couple of points.
In the week ending August 9, the price of Western S-P-F 2×4 #2&Btr KD (RL) was US$374 mfbm. This is up $20, or six per cent from the previous week when it was $354. That week’s price is up $35, or 10 per cent from one month ago when it was $339 mfbm.
When compared to the same week last year when it was $410, that week’s price is down $36, or nine per cent. Compared to two years ago when it was $610, that week’s price is down $236, or 39 per cent.
In the week ending August 9, the price of Southern Yellow Pine East Side 2×4 #2&Btr KD (RL) was $385 mfbm. This is up $5, or one per cent from the previous week when it was $380 mfbm. That week’s price is up $36, or 10 per cent from one month ago when it was $349 mfbm.
When compared to the same week last year when it was $415, that week’s price is down $30, or seven per cent. Compared to two years ago when it was $805, that week’s price is down $420, or 52 per cent.
