Ignace residents skeptical over restart

Dec. 12, 2014, Ignace, Ont. – Resolute Forest Products has reopened its sawmill in Ignace but, despite a $20 million investment, members of the community remain skeptical about the long-term future of the mill.

According to a CBC report, the mill, which had been previously idled for nearly eight years, has successfully restarted with a single shift and 30 staff. However, when the mill was previously in operation, the mill ran with two shifts and 60 staff.

Much of the concern is based on the lack of understanding of the strength of the lumber market, with residents worried that a drop in demand could cause the mill to shut down once again.
