MOU signed with Korea

Sept. 24, 2014 - On September 22, 2014, Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Park Geun-hye, President of the Republic of Korea, witnessed the signing of the Canada-Korea Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for Cooperation in the Field of Forestry. The signing took place during the state visit of PresidentPark to Canada.

The MOU, which was signed by Greg Rickford, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario, and Shin Won Sop, Minister of the Korea Forest Service, will help promote collaboration on forestry issues in a direct and mutually advantageous way by increasing shared knowledge, and promoting closer science links.

The MOU also enables cooperation by allowing for the:

exchange of data and information in the field of forestry;
testing of innovative approaches to sustainable forest management;
exchange of forestry experts;
encouragement of joint studies or reports; and,
monitoring of the impacts of climate change on the forest sector.
Since 2007, the Government of Canada has invested $1.8 billion to help expand and diversify markets for Canadian forest products, and to help the sector develop and commercialize new technologies and forest products as well as improve its environmental performance. Korea is currently the fourth-largest offshore market for Canadian forest products, with exports totalling $491.8 million in 2013.
