Canadian Woodlands Forum fall meeting recap

Oct. 24, 2017 - On October 4-5, 2017, the Canadian Woodlands Forum and Forest NB partnered to present the 2017 Fall Meeting in the heart of the beautiful Saint John River valley! Known historically as one of the most fertile, productive land bases in New Brunswick, the counties of Carleton-Victoria provided an excellent setting for the meeting theme “Managing Sustainably from Field to Forest.” Both H.J. Crabbe & Sons Ltd. and the Carleton-Victoria Wood Producers Association & Forest Products Marketing Board served as our proud hosts over the two day event.

The program offered the 150 forestry professionals and community leaders from across the Atlantic region with a great update on key issues facing the forest sector and examples of managing the field/forest landscape for both timber and non-timber values.

Day one provided an interesting technical session featuring an overview of our two co-hosts; an introduction to the agriculture sector in the region; updates on the softwood lumber agreement, future opportunities for non-timber forest products, spruce budworm, vegetation management; along with guest luncheon speaker, the Honorable Rick Doucet, NB Minister of Energy and Resource Development.

The program continued with two great site visits to the H.J. Crabbe Lumber & Sons sawmill and pellet mill as well as the BWS Manufacturing facility (forestry trailers).

The group spent day two in the woods visiting live thinning operations on Hugo Fillion’s woodlot, Snokist Ltd. - the region’s largest producer of field-grown Christmas Trees (both active members of the Carleton-Victoria Wood Producers Association), state-of-the-art sugar bush at Skedaddle Maple, owned and operated by Adam and Natalie Stone including a great lunch provided by the Mount Pleasant Women’s Institute, two great sites hosted by Crabbe Lumber featuring field origin softwood stands & live hardwood thinning and improvement cuts.

All in all, a great two days with picture perfect fall weather!
