Logging train accident on Vancouver Island leaves three dead

Updated: A third person was confirmed dead by RCMP after being transported to hospital.

April 21, 2017 - Two people have been confirmed dead following a logging train derailment in Woss, B.C. on Thursday.

Woss is a small community on the northeastern part of Vancouver Island.

RCMP Cpl. Tammy Douglas confirmed in a statement that three other people were injured and have been hospitalized.

The train is owned by Vancouver-based Western Forest Products. "At this time, we express our deepest concern and condolences to the families, friends, and coworkers of those whose lives were lost this morning and who are injured. Our hearts and minds are with them," Western Forest Products president and chief executive officer Don Demens said in a statement.

RCMP said they received the report around 8:45 a.m. on Thursday. Douglas noted the significant efforts by police, fire and ambulance personnel who worked to save those trapped at the scene.

“RCMP Island District General Investigation Section is investigating with partners including the Coroners Service, Transportation Safety Board and Worksafe BC. RCMP Victim Services are also on scene,” Douglas said in the statement.

The cause of the derailment is still under investigation.
