Sites selected for B.C. live logging show

June 15, 2015 – The first wave of live exhibitors dropped in on the logging site for DEMO International 2016 in Maple Ridge, B.C., on Thursday, June 11 for the first site selection meeting.

Held to give both active and static exhibitors the chance to select forest sites that best match their equipment and displays, the site selection meeting also gives us a peak at who’ll be running gear on this beautiful site. DEMO 2016 will be hosted by UBC’s Forestry Department at their 5,200-ha. Malcolm Knapp Research Forest from September 22 to 24, 2016.

Located just 45 minutes from Vancouver, the DEMO loop totals just over three kilometres of some of the best timber we’ve seen at a DEMO in over a decade. Established after harvest and a fire in 1931, the forest allows for sites ranging from 1.0 to 2.0 ha., and timber averaging 32 metres tall and 32 cm DBH. The species mix leans to hemlock and cedar, with some sites heavy to cedar as well.

Slope and terrain is also an issue on some of the active sites, with slopes ranging from 0 to over 60 per cent. The slopes will also make for some excellent viewing conditions for spectators, with sites offering both uphill and downhill viewing. Overall reaction to location, terrain and timber was very favourable among the larger exhibitors present for the day.

The site supports more than 20 active sites, where exhibitor crews will harvest log-length material for UBC’s client mills during the three-day live demo. The site also allows as many as 60 static sites to show off everything from live grapples and portable mills to attachments, tires, tracks and hydraulics. Exhibitors that have already signed up and selected sites include:
