Ontario appoints chair for local FMC

In addition, Grant Goodwin, Donald Fry, Raymond Boudreau, Tina Forsyth, and Gaétan Malette have been appointed to its board of directors.

NFMC is Ontario’s first local forest management corporation, which will help re-energize the forestry sector, create jobs and boost the economy. The NFMC will administer and oversee the sale of timber along the northeast shore of Lake Superior, and will manage four forest management units – Nagagami Forest, White River Forest, Big Pic Forest, and the Pic River Forest.

According to new release, with this new model, local timber supply will be better aligned with market demand. It will also be easier for entrepreneurs, First Nations and local communities to participate in the forestry industry and will help the forestry sector grow and create jobs.

Modernizing the management of wood supply is part of the government’s Growth Plan for Northern Ontario. A strong northern economy will help create a fair society and give the people of Ontario more opportunities for jobs and economic prosperity.

“Tenure modernization is part of our long-term commitment to revitalizing Ontario’s forestry industry,” said Minister of Natural Resources David Orazietti. “A modernized tenure system will create new economic development opportunities for northern communities and First Nations, and the appointment of the board for Nawiinginokiima is an important step in this process.”
