Resolute head can pursue online critic
Resolute Forest Products Canada Inc. president and CEO Richard Garneau has been given the green light to pursue whoever allegedly defamed him in anonymous online postings.

The Chronicle Herald reported that Nova Scotia Supreme Court Justice Peter Rosinski granted an order Thursday requiring Bragg Communications Inc., owner of Internet service provider Eastlink, to disclose the identity of an Eastlink account holder, identified online as “Fed-up,” who allegedly made the comments in response to an article published in September on the website, foresttalk.com, an online forestry publication.
The article referred to debt reduction and share buy-back plans by Resolute, which earlier this year closed the Bowater Mersey paper mill in Queens County, throwing hundreds of people out of work.
Garneau’s lawyer David Coles, who said in court that the online comments amounted to allegations that his client was a criminal, wouldn’t comment afterwards on what subsequent legal action might be taken.
Treenotic, the Antigonish publisher of the online article, withdrew the comments after being contacted by Coles and agreeing that they were inappropriate.
Treenotic also provided Coles with Fed-up’s Eastlink account information.
