Is mass timber construction gaining ground?

July 19, 2016 –  With high-profile mass timber projects making headlines and winning awards, some in the construction industry are wondering if this material will take a bite out of concrete’s share of the market.

Russell Acton, of Acton Ostry Architects Inc., predicts a “sweet spot” for mass timber in the six- to 12-storey medium rise segment, particularly as the cost of using wood drops over time.

But Michael McSweeney, president of the Cement Association of Canada, says his group hasn’t seen any evidence pointing to an increase in wood for industrial, commercial and institutional (ICI) construction.
