Madison’s BC Coast log prices report: September 2021

November 12, 2021  By Madison's Lumber Reporter

The next edition of the Coast Log Market Reports issued by the B.C. Ministry of Forests will be posted within two weeks; the looming timber price increases will be no surprise to subscribers of Madison’s BC Coast Log prices report, since they have been able to see updates monthly instead of quarterly.

By far the largest consumer of North America lumber products is U.S. home building. Given the recent changes to the calculation of B.C. stumpage, based on lumber prices, there is now a much closer relationship between lumber prices — which are reported weekly — and the log market.

Still pushing up at an unusual time of year, for the week of October 8, 2021 the price of Western S-P-F 2×4 #2&Btr KD (RL) was US$580 mfbm. This is up by +$40, or +7%, from the previous week when it was $540. That week’s price is up by +$92, or +19%, from one month ago when it was $488.

Compared to the same week last year, when it was $960, for the week of October 8 the price of Western S-P-F 2×4 is down by -$380, or -40%. Compared to two years’ ago when it was $368, this week’s price is up by +$212, or +58%.
