No softwood lumber deal any time soon: Grenier

June 30, 2016 – Carl Grenier isn’t expecting Canada and the United States to agree to a new softwood lumber deal any time soon.
Grenier, who led the Free Trade Lumber Council from 1999 to 2006, writes that the United States wants a hard quota limiting Canadian imports. Canada doesn’t. And so the U.S. seems poised to play out a familiar strategy of “petition, probe, protect, bleed and settle” until the Canadian side compromises.
