A Nova Scotia paperboard mill that has operated for over 84 years ends production on Friday.

Robert Patzelt, vice president of corporate development of Scotia Investments Ltd., says 135 workers jobs will end at the Minas Basin Pulp and Power Co. Ltd.

However, he says about 40 employees will be offered work at the CKF Inc. plant that manufactures fibre containers next door.

The factory is one of two paper mills that shut down in small Nova Scotia communities this year.

Resolute Forest Products announced the closure of its mill in Liverpool, N.S., in June, while the owners of Minas Basin announced its closure on Nov. 1.

Patzelt says it’s a ”solemn day” that marks the end of an era in the small community of Hantsport.

The manager praised the employees who remained at the factory in the weeks since the shutdown was announced, saying they have worked ”safely and productively” for the last six weeks.
