Paper Excellence has issued a statement debunking claims from stories published recently linking it to Asia Pulp and Paper (APP), which several environmental groups allege is responsible for deforestation.

“Paper Excellence is separate and entirely independent from APP, which is controlled by other members of the Wijaya family,” the statement said. “There is no involvement of any other Wijaya family member in Paper Excellence or Fibre Excellence.”

Jackson Wijaya, owner of Paper Excellence, is the son of Teguh Ganda Widjaja, the current head of the Indonesia-based APP. His grandfather, Eka Tjipta Widjaja, immigrated to Indonesia from China and founded Sinar Mas, the conglomerate that owns APP.

“In the early days, Jackson benefited from some experience gained from the family business early in his life, as well as support getting his company started. This is hardly a unique or exceptional circumstance.”

Recent reports also tied the company to Chinese financial institutions, which Paper Excellence also denied in the statement.

“We have no outstanding loans from any Chinese institution, nor any other financial ties to China.”

Paper Excellence highlighted its commitment to Canadian communities after the completion of its most recent acquisition of Resolute through Domtar.
