Saperda threatens poplars in Alberta

April 28, 2016 – A new wood boring bug infestation is causing issues in the dry woods of Alberta, this time threatening the population of poplars in the province.

According to a report from Global News, the saperda is the bugging causing the damage, impacting many of the poplar stands from Edmonton to Saskatoon.

Over the past decade, Alberta’s pine population has been severely impacted by the spread of the mountain pine beetle. The report states that 25 per cent of the province’s pine population has been impacted by the MPB breakout, while 30 per cent of the poplar population is likely to be impacted by the saperda.
