Saskatchewan First Nations form group to advance forestry opportunities
Jan. 11, 2019 – Thirteen First Nations and their related business organizations have formed the new Saskatchewan First Nations Forestry Alliance, which will determine how business-related opportunities will be handled on First Nations' ancestral lands. Much of Saskatchewan's forested area is part of these lands.

According to paNOW, the Alliance will direct forest management licenses and commercial arrangements on over four million cubic metres of Saskatchewan’s annual allowable cut.
The agreement also aims to address the gap in Saskatchewan’s forest industry after Weyerhaeuser closed the Prince Albert Pulp Mill in 2006. “It becomes really challenging to have an integrated forest operation when there’s nobody to take the hardwood,” Robert Finacati, CEO of Montreal Lake Business Ventures, told paNOW.
