Laser scale a first for NL mill
A Newfoundland sawmill says it will be the first in Canada to build an automated laser scaling system for measuring wood volume.

Through the use of mathematical models and 3D laser scanners, Burton’s Cove Logging and Lumber Limited, in Hampden, Newfoundland and Labrador, plans to develop an automated scaling system that will allow the company to measure the volume of wood that can be used for lumber.
Burton’s Cove currently uses a manual system to scale sawlogs. If the project is successfully completed, it will become the first sawmill in Canada to introduce the innovation. The provincial government will invest $122,100 for a total project cost of $190,309.
The Burtons Cove Logging scale is among 18 projects receiving $1.6 million in funding from the Research & Development Corporation of Newfoundland and Labrador (RDC).
