Edson Forest Products hopes to keep burning waste wood

June 30, 2016 – Edson Forest Products is requesting an extension on its certificate of Variance, which allows the mill to burn waste wood in a thermal oil heating plant.

The mill, like many in Alberta, has been unable to sell the wood to oil companies since the downturn in the province’s oil and gas sector. So, the company is seeking a two-year extension on its Variance, which is set to expire on June 30.

The extension would buy decision-makers time to find an alternate use for the waste wood.

If the extension is not granted, the company says it will have to stock the wood in hog piles, which pose an “extreme” fire risk.

Staff were at a Yellowhead County council meeting earlier this week, seeking a letter of support from the county.
