Georgia-Pacific to build state-of-the-art sawmill in Alabama
Sept. 13, 2017 - Georgia-Pacific is building a new $100-million, state-of-the-art sawmill in Talladega, Ala., the company announced today.
The new 300,000-square-foot facility will be built on the company's former plywood plant that closed in 2008. Construction is scheduled to begin immediately, and the sawmill is expected to be up and running late next year.
"This new facility is the first of several we have in our current plan," Fritz Mason, vice-president and general manager of Georgia-Pacific Lumber, said in a news release. "The demand for lumber continues to improve as the housing market recovers, so we are evaluating similar investments in Georgia, Texas and Mississippi."
Once up and running the new sawmill will receive about 150 log trucks a day and produce 230 mbft of lumber annually. There are plans to expand the mill to 300 mbft in the near future, the company said.
"Georgia-Pacific's new investment in Talladega will bring good jobs and enhanced opportunities to the area's citizens while also benefiting timber owners in the region," Alabama Governor Kay Ivey said in the release. The mill is expected to create more than 100 new jobs with an annual payroll of $5 million.
"The availability of talent and natural resources makes Talladega an ideal site for this new lumber production facility," Mason said. "The City of Talladega, Talladega County, and the State of Alabama have been incredibly supportive of this new venture and we look forward to a long and beneficial relationship."
Georgia-Pacific has more than 2,300 employees at seven facilities in Alabama, and in the last five years has invested approximately $1.1 billion in additional capital and acquisitions.
