In a report in the local Atikokan Progress, Martel says the company has already committed $25 million of the mill’s expected $62 million cost, with the rest of the budget being tenderd now. He added that construction will start in March, with the gas-fired kilns operational by year end, the planer mill up and running by early spring next year, and the sawmill running soon after.

The Sapawe mill will be part of a regional unit that includes the company’s sawmills in nearby Ignace and Thunder Bay. The new mill will make 8 to 16 ft lengths in 1×3 to 2×10 dimensions at a pace of about 150 million bdft/yr. The kilns will handle lumber from this mill as well as Ignace (265 million bdft when rebuilt), all dressed in what the company expects to be the most modern planer mill in North America when it starts up. Production will be shipped via rail once a new 1-km spur is added.
