Resolute Forest Products, which shut down its Nova Scotia paper mill earlier this year, is preparing to dismantle a sawmill that was part of its operations in the province.

The Montreal-based forestry firm says it will move its equipment in the Oakhill Sawmill out of province to service other operations within the company.

Jacques Vachon, senior vice-president of corporate affairs, states the company’s plans in a letter to the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg.

The Oakhill Sawmill used to employ about 100 people, but was idled shortly after the Bowater Mersey Paper mill was closed in June.

The operation was not purchased by the Nova Scotia government in a land and assets deal announced last week.

The province said it couldn’t purchase the mill because it would have risked trade sanctions under provisions of the Canada-U.S. Softwood Lumber Agreement.
