Tall wood mixed-use building breaks ground on Vancouver Island

A first-of-its-kind 12-storey mass timber residential and commercial building broke ground in Langford, B.C., this week.

The building, called Tallwood 1 by Design Build Services, is the first to be built within the five Vancouver Island communities that have adopted mass timber construction that allows for tall wood buildings up to 12 storeys.

“Building a five-storey office building with mass timber has less than a third of the global warming impact when compared with steel and concrete building of the same size,” Matthew McKay, founder of Design Build Services, told CTV News.
