The fire initially broke out on Nov. 2. It was declared fully extinguised on Nov. 4, but experienced several flare-ups afterwards, according to a company release.

Tolko said on Nov. 9 that there was no more smouldering on flare-ups after a decision was made to remove some roofing to enable fire crews to see what areas were left to attend to.

“At this time, we cannot say with certainty how long the sawmill will remain out of operation,” Tolko said in a statement. “We know this is difficult news for our employees and we wish we had better, more concrete news at this point. We do want to assure everyone that we are working as quickly as possible to assess the damage and determine our next steps.”

Tolko told the Williams Lake Tribune that the sawmill could remain closed for up to six months.
