U.S. government launches softwood lumber investigations

Dec. 23, 2016 - The U.S. government says it is officially launching investigations into the Canada-U.S. softwood lumber dispute.

The investigations have come as a result of the U.S. Lumber Coalition's petition in November, alleging that Canadian softwood lumber producers pay very low market prices for their sawlogs and, as a result, damage the livelihoods of their American counterparts.

The U.S. Commerce Department is carrying out the investigations alongside the U.S. International Trade Commission which will make a decision by Jan. 9, 2017. That decision will determine if free trade of softwood lumber will continue between Canada and the U.S., or if the latter will impose taxes on its neighbour to the north.
