U.S. single-unit housing starts rise

Sept. 19, 2013 - U.S. housing starts remained flat in August when compared to July's numbers, rising just short of a percentage point in August from the previous month. The numbers look better, however, when compared to the previous year - they are up 19 per cent from August 2012.

Single-family housing starts performed better than multi-family in most of the country rising by seven percentage points on average in August over July 2013 and almost 17 per cent from the previous year.

Single-family housing starts were up most notably in the West (17.5 per cent from the previous month). The Northeast and Midwest were up by 9.6 per cent and 7.1 per cent but single-family housing starts were only up by 2.3 per cent in the South where multi-family housing starts rose by 12 per cent.
