COFI praises BC gov’s plan to modernize forest policy

June 2, 2021  By COFI

Susan Yurkovich, President and CEO of the BC Council of Forest Industries (COFI), made the following statement with respect to yesterday’s release of the government of B.C.’s paper on “Modernizing Forest Policy in British Columbia”:

“The forest industry has been foundational to the economy and quality of life in the province for generations. That’s why it’s important that the government of B.C. has outlined its vision and intentions with respect to modernizing B.C.’s forest policy. After nearly 20 years, we agree that it is time to recognize the challenges and opportunities we face along with the dynamic nature of forests and the forest industry.

We appreciate the province’s desire to work collaboratively to ensure healthy forests, create more opportunities for Indigenous people and communities, sustain good jobs for British Columbians and deliver low carbon forest products to the world. We also appreciate the government’s acknowledgment that having a sustainable and competitive forest products industry here in B.C. will help us achieve all those objectives.

We understand that this important work will take place in the months and years ahead as the vision is implemented throughout the province and we look forward to continuing to work with government, First Nations, labour, communities, and our industry partners on the path forward.”
