HewSaw dx sawing process speeds up primary breakdown
Nov. 15, 2016 – HewSaw has introduced a new four-arbour dx sawing process for primary breakdown that maximizes speed and recovery.
The new technology replaces the standard double-arbour sawing technique with a four-arbour system. The first set of arbours house the saws for an initial or pilot cut into the cant, while the second set of arbours house a set of saws that finish the cut.
The new process works well with HewSaw’s philosophy of centre line sawing where all processing is calculated and aligned to the centre line of the HewSaw machine.
“When we equip our HewSaw sawing machines and sawlines with this patent-pending technology, we can provide our customers with the ability to run larger diameter logs at faster speeds for longer periods of time, and we can reduce our saw kerf, increasing recovery and yield from each log,” HewSaw’s chief engineer, Raimo Karjalainen, said in a news release.
Because the saws are not cutting all the way through the cant in a single cut, the depth of cut is substantially reduced, meaning sawmills using this technology can run at higher speeds with smaller diameter saws and thinner kerfs. The result is more production volume in a shift, higher recovery or yield from each log, improved surface quality and exceptional saw deviation, and the possibility to run for longer periods before saw and knife changes.
HewSaw’s engineering department developed the new technology at the company’s headquarters in Mantyharju, Finland. The dx sawing process has since been tested and proven in sawmills in Finland and the U.S., and is now being introduced the HewSaw’s markets worldwide.
The technology works with most types of HewSaw machines from the company’s newer model smaller machines with optimized edging through to its state-of-the-art multi-unit sawlines that can take multiple edged sideboards at each machine centre. It will also work with HewSaw’s CRS units (splitter saws) and it can be used with both batch feeding and scan-n-set applications.
