Mondi Group completes acquisition of Hinton Pulp from West Fraser

February 5, 2024  By CFI Staff

Mondi Group has successfully acquired the Hinton Pulp mill from West Fraser Timber after receiving approval from Canadian regulatory bodies and fulfilling standard closing conditions.

Sean McLaren, president and CEO of West Fraser, expressed gratitude to the dedicated employees, the Hinton community, and the Alberta government for their collaboration in finalizing the transaction.

“The future of the Hinton Pulp mill is bright,” said McLaren.

The agreement to sell unbleached Kraft pulp mill to Mondi Group was initially announced by West Fraser in July 2023. Under this deal, West Fraser will maintain the supply of fibre to the Hinton mill through a long-term contract, utilizing residuals from its Alberta sawmills.

Mondi Group plans to invest Euro 400 million in expanding the Hinton mill, with a primary focus on a new 200,000 tonne per annum kraft paper machine. The expected operational commencement of this expansion is set for the second half of 2027, pending pre-engineering and permitting processes.

Mondi is an integrated packaging and paper company employing 22,000 people across 100 production sites in more than 30 countries. Mondi has a premium listing on the London Stock Exchange and a secondary listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
