Ligni Bel lumber mill to re-open

The Ligni Bel Ltd. Lumber mill is expected to opened in late October by an affiliate of Northern Pulp Nova Scotia Corp, according to union officials.

“It’s been almost a year since the mill shut down and there has been a lot of anxiety about if and when we’d return to work,” John MacPherson, a 10-year veteran of the Pictou County operation, told The Chronicle Herald.

Word was circulating around Pictou County over the weekend that salaried staff, including some supervisors, received letters with offers to return to work from a newly formed affiliate of Northern Pulp, which operates an Abercrombie Point mill.

Union officials talked to the employer and expect to meet soon to discuss the resumption of operations and initiate negotiations for a new collective agreement, MacPherson said.

About 70 union workers lost jobs when the mill shut down last December. The mill lost its wood supply when NewPage Port Hawkesbury failed last September.
