B.C. providing additional $10 million to support wildfire recovery efforts
Nov. 14, 2018 – To support communities in their recovery efforts following the 2018 wildfire season, the government of British Columbia will provide an additional $10 million, to be distributed through an agreement with the Canadian Red Cross.

In a news release, the provincial government announced the funding is in addition to $3.1 million raised through public and province-matched Red Cross donations, as well as other public donations.
The province plans to use the funds to carry out relief, recovery and resiliency efforts and activities for those affected by the 2018 wildfire season, including:
• debris removal on private land and repair and reconstruction related to uninsured damages
• refrigerator and freezer disposal and replacement
• alternative heating source supplies (e.g. firewood)
• other operational costs
• health and wellness supports
“While the fires are now out, British Columbians can rest assured that government support will be sustained,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and the Solicitor General, in a statement. “Our province is facing a long-term and complicated recovery process for the second year in a row, and the effects to communities and local economies that were impacted by the 2018 wildfire season have been significant. These funds will go a long way to helping wildfire victims get back on their feet.”
Funding allocation will be determined on a case-by-case basis, with the priority being individuals and families who are most vulnerable. The provincial government says the assistance will not duplicate assistance provided through insurance, government or other agency programs. The Canadian Red Cross will also provide additional support to help with longer-term needs.
