Kenora mill adds staff and production

With the U.S. housing market on the upswing, Weyerhaeuser's Kenora, Ont. mill has responded by adding staff and increasing production.

According to The Kenora Daily Miner and News, the mill has hired 20 new staff and as of Jan. 1, 2013, will be increasing its operations to five days a week.

The mill has been operating a four-day shift, which is about 70 per cent of its capacity, but plant manager Bill Candline said with the new staff, it will be performing at 80 per cent.

The mill also said it has realized energy savings in the form of $1.2 million in annual rebates from the Northern Industrial Electricity Rate program, a three-year-old provincial opportunity to subsidize energy costs in the manufacturing and resource sectors.

“We developed the comprehensive plan that identified some capital products that we could invest in, which we have over the last few years — to reduce energy usage, including electricity and we upgraded some of our mobile equipment in our log yard to reduce our reliance on diesel fuel,” Candline said.
