Lumber companies visit India

The solid wood manufacturing industry and wood importers in India are poised to benefit from a trade mission by Canadian lumber companies that took place across Mumbai, Pune, Chandigarh, Delhi-NCR including the DelhiWood trade show at Greater Noida from January 30, 2015 to February 7, 2015.

The mission helped manufacturers, wood importers, contractors, architects and interior designers explore possibilities of using or specifying lumber from Canada; particularly from the province of British Columbia. The Canadian Wood species of Western Hemlock, Douglas fir, SPF, Western Red Cedar and Yellow Cedar can be extensively used in manufacture of doors, windows, furniture, panelling/cladding and turnkey projects involving use of wood in interiors, exteriors and even structural usage.

The Canadian Wood booth at the 4-day DelhiWood 2015 exhibition in Greater Noida piqued the interest of all visitors as it showcased the versatility of different Canadian Wood species through actual product applications created by Indian manufacturers. On display were:

• Doors made by Bull Doors (Ludhiana) and Artius (Gurgaon) using Western Hemlock and Yellow-Cedar respectively
• Crafted solid wooden doors by DS Doors (Faridabad) in all wood species from British Columbia
• Solid wood furniture in Western Hemlock by Ekbote (Pune)
• Pergola made in Douglas-fir with rafters and ceiling in SPF by ANJ (Mumbai) and also interior panelling and exterior cladding in Western Hemlock and Western Red Cedar respectively
• A Japanese tea service table and lamp in Yellow-Cedar was made by Japanese designer Kenji Matsumoto (Pondicherry)

Talking about the mission, Pranesh Chhibber, Country Director, FII India said, “This is great platform to provide solutions to the Indian timber and wood working industry and address their unique challenges through certified lumber from sustainably managed sources in Canada. Accordingly the conversation around the need for timber such as Canadian Wood has been extremely positive as a long term solution for a better tomorrow by the wood working industry.”

The delegation comprised of large Canadian lumber companies including industry heavyweights such as Canfor, West Fraser, Interfor, Tolko and Western Forest Products among many others. State and Central Government associations from Canada were also a part of the contingent such as BC Wood Specialities Group, Coast Forest Products Association, Natural Resources Canada and Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources & Forestry.
