File Week 2024 wraps today after five days of coverage on new technology and processes for the filing room, and strategies for filers to find their niche in the world of advancing automation.
Here’s a snapshot of our takeaways from the featured articles and columns.
1) Struggles, solutions, optimism: Our main coverage this week was from the BC Saw Filers Association annual convention that took place in Kamloops over the weekend. From discussing the current industry struggles, to recruiting new blood to the trade, a lot was covered at the two-day event.
2) Choosing circle saw grinders: Selecting filing room equipment can be a daunting task if one doesn’t analyze what is wanted out of, let’s say, the new grinder. Paul Smith provides a list of things to consider in deciding what is needed for your particular filing room.
3) Splitting hairs: “Management and maintenance pour hours into saws, rolls and other high wear parts. All while ignoring worn or poorly maintained saw guides that are the main support component for accurate, repeatable lumber manufacturing,” writes Red Seal millwright Josh Bergen as he breaks down the basic components to maintain tolerance.
4) Leveraging tech investments: Yes, technology is wonderful, but tried and true practices still have their place, says Dave Purinton. He further asks the question: “Are you providing the essential foundation to leverage those technology investments?”
5) Saw Filing 101: When things go wrong, the saws get blamed. But our seasoned filers? They keep calm and saw on. CFI’s resident saw filing columnist Paul Smith writes about how good sawfilers should always be ready and willing to help with any sawmill problem. In another column, he cleverly advises mills on pairing trim saws with the proper trimmer, just like pairing wine with the right food!
CFI’s File Week landing page is a year-round hub for both sawfilers and other stakeholders to learn best practices and find the latest information on advancements in saw filing technology. Find the landing page here, or anytime on our website’s MENU tab, under Explore.
See you next year for File Week 2025!
